I am a HUGE fan of a narrow
depth of field (DOF). This is something that you can't do with a point and shoot camera.
This is a good enough reason alone to only use an slr camera. And it's easy. My assignment in class last week was to turn in pictures showing good use of depth of field. So I took a bunch of boring pictures around the house - because it was literally freezing cold outside. But my favorite pictures were of little Samuel (of course). Since I got my 50mm 1.8 lens, getting a narrow depth of field was easy.
(Side note: I am very happy with this lens for the price. As it's only $90. BUT the price matches the quality. Fun lens to start out with and play around with, but my heart is set on a "real" lens...whenever I have the cash for it!) Keeping the aperture wide open (F1.8) gave me nice clear shots of Sam while keeping the background blurred. This lens also lets a lot of light in so I am not struggling as much with the indoor lighting.
